CISS wiki

With the theme of providing novel and effective solutions for software and information systems, CISS has involved a spectrum of research areas many of which are of a multi-disciplinary nature. CISS has a strong record of winning grants from various funding sources, including EPSRC, EU, Scottish Enterprise, and Industrial Foundations. These funded projects have enabled CISS to make active contributions to frontier research in a number of emerging research issues. Much of the work in CISS has tremendous industrial values and potentials for commercialisation and knowledge transfer success, and has gained CISS members recognition and experience in these aspects as well, for example, spin out, patent, tool development and consultancy.

Currently, CISS focuses on several key research areas: Information Visualisation, Software Reuse and Evolution, Pedestrian Behaviour, Data Mining and Cleaning, and Parallel Computing.

In the 2008 RAE, CISS continued to demonstrate world leading and international excellence in its enriched and vigorous areas.

Biodiversity Informatics, Component and Service Based Software Reuse, Concurrent and Parallel Systems, Data Quality and Data Cleaning, Information Visualisation, Knowledge bases and Document Management, Pedestrian Behaviour, Pervasive Adaptation

Current and Recent Projects

' ' FlexiCAGE
Sponsored by a SMART Grant from Scottish Executive, the project aims to achieve a commercially capable component adaptation prototype tool via market-informed research and development. A company has been started as the vehicle to carry out the commercialisation activities.
' ' Information Visualisation of Microarray Time-course Data
Microarray time-course data relates to the recorded activity of large numbers of genes (~8,000) recorded in parallel over a number of time points (~20). This data contains a massive amount of potentially valuable information.
' ' Intelligent Repository
This project focuses on building an intelligent component repository aiming measurement software as a specific application domain.
' ' REORIENT
Implementing Change in the European Railway System.
' ' SAGA Bench
SAGA Bench endevours to develop a component adaptation and integration tool with a cutting-edge technology called ScenArio-based Generative component Adaptation. E-business systems have been selected as the particular application domain due to its popularity.
' ' SEEK
SEEK: Science Environment for Ecological Knowledge The goals of the Science Environment for Ecological Knowledge (SEEK) are to make fundamental improvements in how researchers can 1) gain global access to ecological data and information, 2) rapidly locate and utilize distributed computational
' ' Taxon Concept Modelling
The Taxon Concept Modelling project is associated developing standard data models for representing taxonomic names and concepts for use in the biodiversity community. The work is associated with the Taxon Names and Cocnepts interest group of the International Taxonomic Database Working Group.
' ' TaxVis
The TaxViz project is developing visualisation techniques for comparing multiple taxonomic hierarchies.
' ' Watching Walkers
This EPSRC funded project arose from the Celebration of UK Engineering Excellence (Nov 2004) and resulted in the creation of a demonstration of infrared detection of people. The demonstration was aimed at children and motivating their interest in Science and Technology.
